CFXU Welcomes On the Spot Quartet for Sunday Jazz

The sounds of the On the Spot Quartet fill the packed yet cozy radio station lounge room, it’s a Sunday night after a long week and Robert Greer’s bass, Caito Macdonald’s drums, Robyn Feltham’s guitar, and Dalton Slind’s saxophone take you away from work to do and another week to endure. Their music, mostly coming from the Real Book of Jazz, their bible (“If it ain’t from the real book we ain’t playing it” - Robert Grier), is a nice change of pace from the Spotify DJ’D parties the night before. They play with energy and fun, each one getting their chance to solo and shine; they are having the time of their life, fully locked into what they are playing.

The group of first year Jazz students was brought together by Slind in November to start jamming outside of class, and just have fun doing what they love. The members all clicked, enjoying playing music with new friends, but they wanted more—they wanted to showcase their talent, and get a chance to play for people besides each other and whoever happens to live in their hallway. Once the new year rolled around, Caito reached out to find a place to play. They had all been to Jazz night at the Townhouse, but they wanted a scene that they could make their own, and not being 19, stay for the duration of the event. They figured it out with CFXU the Fox, the StFX radio station, and set up a weekly show that will reoccur for the duration of the semester.

On the Spot Quartet will play every Sunday night at 7pm in the CFXU station, located on the first floor of the StFX Students’ Union Building. Come out and watch these fantastic musicians, enjoy a respite from the anxiety of unread readings and blank pages, and drift away to the sounds of jazz.
