What to Do on Campus When There’s Nothing to Do

Have you found yourself recently in a state of listlessness? Maybe you’ve finished your work for the day, or it’s the evening and you need a break, but it seems like there’s nothing going on? Campus is quiet, there’s no one out and about, but you are itching to get out of your room and do something.

I’ve found myself in that position a few times, so I’ve procured a small list of stuff to do when there seems to be nothing going on (because chances are, there’s something happening).

Option one: Explore!
Have you been inside of every building on campus? Are you sure? Have you climbed every staircase in Immaculata, been to each floor of Nicholson tower, seen every section that the libraries have to offer? It may seem simple, but there is so much to find when you go wandering through various hallways. Have you visited our Indigenous support center, Kiknu? How about the DEC in fourth floor Bloomfield?  Been to every food spot on campus? Exploring may be how you find your next study spot, or how you meet a good friend.

Option two: Go to your professor’s office hours.
They tell you to do it, older students tell you to do it, maybe you even tell yourself to do it, but somehow, it rarely happens. If it’s the afternoon or morning and you’re searching for something to do, look through your syllabi and see if a prof is available. You may get some advice on a test/project, or you may just get to have a nice chat. I promise your professors aren’t as scary as they seem (and they’re here to help you!)

Option three: Figure out if there are events going on.
Did you know that StFX has over 100 societies? Most, if not all of which, have Instagram pages on which they post upcoming events. These societies want you to show up, and they want you to have a good time! It’s why they exist in the first place. And on top of them, we have organisations like the DEC, The Inn, and The Bloomfield Hub which frequently host events and activities.

Option four: Exercise.
All StFX students get a built-in membership to the Keating Centre rinks (when open) and the Amelia Saputo Centre gym and pool. There are exercise classes to sign up for every day of the week (I suggest the Tone Zone class!), and the pool has a schedule of events up on their Instagram page and their website. The gym is also spacious and has all the equipment you need to get a good, full body workout.

I hope this list helps anyone with their “event-finding” troubles. And if you’re still stuck on what to do, not loving any of the options listed, there’s always a spot to tuck yourself away with your laptop or a good book. If it’s nice out, maybe settle outside on a picnic table, or try to make plans with friends to get lunch or dinner. There’s always something going on around campus: sometimes you just have to create it yourself.
