What Can we do About Climate Change? StFX Students Respond

Climate change is a monumental global emergency that affects all of us. I wanted to hear what some other first year students at StFX are thinking about the subject, and how they feel we could respond – whether it be as a school or simply as human beings. These are their ideas:

Alasdair Cameron | Mabou, Nova Scotia:

“I just think there need to be a lot more initiatives to go green, especially at big institutions like these … new ways for the school to cut their carbon footprint”

Liam Livingstone | Toronto, Ontario:

“I think it is a very big issue, and it is consistently overlooked. I think everyone will say they will support it and want to make a change, but no one really does anything – no one is making the step to do anything. They are hoping someone else is making the big leap and they can piggyback off of it. I think at StFX that … cutting down on the wasted food at meal hall would be a really good move. Take what you eat. For students, taking smaller portions or going up a couple times instead of grabbing everything at once and then not eating it all.”

Rachael Humphrey | Markham, Ontario

“I think to counter climate change we can be more sustainable – using less plastic and using more reusable items. Say instead of going to Starbucks and using the cups there, bring your own reusable cup.”

Autumn Gravlin | Sussex, New Brunswick

“I think that when we strike, it is great, but I wonder if the people that do that are doing things besides that. I feel like there are a lot of precautions we can take instead … Like instead of just living your everyday life and then going to a protest just because it is cool, trying to find ways in our lives to change it.”

Christina Gentile | Laval, Quebec

“Honestly, I think we should take action more than just on social media. We are really quick to share things, but what are people doing to actually make a change? Let’s say, and I’m guilty of this too, but when we go to Starbucks and we always take the cups, is there any way to minimize that waste, instead of always going for that easy option which is that non-reusable cup.”

Evan Fortin | Stratford, Ontario

“I think we should take some serious and immediate changes to the way we go about energy and climate; we should stop building pipelines and start making more sudden changes and make a significant change to how we treat the environment.”
